Samsung UN55ES6100 Has All The Capabilities of the ES6500 Minus the 3D
The Samsung UN55ES6100 55” 1080p 120Hz Slim LED/LCD HDTV comes complete with Smart Hub and Smart TV technology. We have endorsed the Smart TV as definitely the best Smart TV application ever, to date but cannot really say the same for the Smart Hub, which allows you to browse the internet using the on-screen QWERTY. We have found this to be distasteful for its lack of response and slowness. The matte screen finish does give the Samsung UN55ES6100 some flair and elegance but it also gives out an unwanted glare. Although the Smart TV options is divine and loaded with apps, we have had some problems with certain apps causing the application to crash whilst loading. Samsung UN55ES6100 calibration might be a necessary evil, so eat your hearts out, to find out what you need to do to receive optimal viewing pleasure.Color, Picture and Angled Viewing
After having read the online instructions to help you achieve the maximum, in trems of picture and color quality, you need to be aware of a few other things before you can relax in your armchair, with a bag of popcorn and a can of beer.
Firstly keep the backlight at the right setting. When calibrating the Samsung UN55ES6100 pictures be sure to keep all the settings disabled. This allowed for an appealing combination of colors all uniformly exhibited in their true splendour. We measured contrast post-calibration at a solid 2505:1. The Samsung UN55ES6100 also performed beautifully with a Clear Motion Rate (CMR) of 240. We were able to watch a couple of sports events and documentaries and fast-moving scenes integrated splendidly within the picture.
There are a few other settings we think that you should change around, for optimal effects. Go to the Advanced Picture menu and select Custom, then turn the Blur Reduction to 10 and Judder Reduction to 0. You can also go to Picture Menu – Picture Options – Click Enter – Auto Motion Plus – Click Enter – Custom – Enter – Adjust options as mentioned earlier.
Angled viewing will undoubtedly suffer, also because of the matte finish and expect a reduction of 20% from saturation and contrast when angled at 25-30% from the centre.
Menu Function OK I Suppose
We haven’t spoken much about the Menu function on the Samsung UN55ES6100. This is one of the places you’ll visit most when in trouble or feeling brave enough to toggle around settings. The remote control of the Samsung UN55ES6100 is terribly basic, with the exception that the Exit key for Smart TV apps is just underneath the right arrow key. It is obvious to us (but not Samsung) that accidentally pressing a key which is so close to another key (and used plenty of times) could have you pressing the wrong one. Scenario – you click on Exit when you didn’t mean to and would need to log in again and continue where you left off earlier (if you remember where you were!)
Raise Your Glasses to a Great LED/LCD
We cannot really blame Samsung for falling short in some areas whilst designing and presenting the Samsung UN55ES6100 for one and all to admire. Reviewing the perfect TV would be kind of useless and minor flaws are normal, especially if suppliers are then going to learn from them and evolve them into something better. We are quite positive that Samsung and their Samsung UN55ES6100 have made many big strides from previous models and continue to improve, whilst also remaining competitive price-wise, which is something Samsung have done very well throughout the years. Here’s hoping that Samsung continue on the road they have chosen.
